At the July 11th Board of Supervisors meeting, County resident David Curry (Mattaponi district) presented the County with a special gift on behalf of himself and Debbie Palmo. A commemorative flag honoring those who died in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11th, 2001 will soon be on display at the Caroline County Visitor’s Center in Carmel Church.
The flag features star and stripes comprised of the names of those who died on September 11 at the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and the Shanksville, PA field where Flight 93 went down en route to New York City. This flag is one of 3,000 which flew in Battery Park, Manhattan on September 8-12 2011 in honor of the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
Sales of these flags benefit several charities and organizations, including the Wounded Warrior Project, The National 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and the Boy Scouts of America. More information about the flags, traditional flag etiquette, benefited groups, and an extensive photo gallery can be found at www.flagofhonor.org
It is believed that a resident of Caroline County was a casualty of the attack and that his or her name is featured on the flag. Any information regarding this person would be greatly appreciated by the Neutral News or the Board of Supervisors. The county would like to pay proper tribute to this lost patriot, whoever they may be.
